Improving Reading Education in Laos

Soon, more children attending 1st and 2nd grades in Laos will learn to read with a different method. The objective is to improve the quality of reading education in early grades, and to develop evidence on “what works” for stronger reading skills of children. School principals and senior teachers in some schools will receive specialized training to be able to better supervise reading lessons. Research will also be carried out to develop policy options for reading instruction for ethnic students. This is one of the activities that will be financed by a new GPE grant of US$16.8 million allocated to Laos in December 2014.
