For children of nomadic herders in Mongolia, having access to early childhood education is difficult. Long distances to school combined with the nomadic lifestyle of their families contribute to the challenge.
A $10 million grant from the Global Partnership for Education to Mongolia has helped give these children access to preschool by providing mobile ger-kindergartens (a ger is a large one-room tent easily put up and down when nomadic families move).
To date, 100 mobile ger-kindergartens have been distributed in rural areas and give about 3,700 children easy access to pre-school.
The mobile ger-kindergartens have been successful in increasing preschool enrollments in rural areas and will help children be ready to succeed in primary school.
The GPE grant also supports early education for children in disadvantaged communities by constructing kindergartens.
